About Flu VaccinationPrint
It’s tough on the whole family when someone falls ill with the flu. The flu is more than the sniffles – it can mean days or weeks off work and can lead to more severe complications, particularly for those with underlying health conditions. The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones is to get the flu vaccine.
Flu vaccinations are still available at many Terry White Chemists in QLD and WA, and some SA stores. For only $20, you’ll receive a quick and convenient flu vaccination to help reduce your risk of catching the flu this year. For your best shot at keeping yourself and your family healthy, make an appointment today. (Age restrictions do apply – you must be over 18.)
Flu vaccination clinics in NSW, VIC and TAS have completed for this year. If you missed out, make sure you register your interest here to be the first to know when they will next be available for the 2016 flu season.
Does Terry White Chemists have this year's flu vaccine?
Yes. Vaccines available in Australia currently are those for the 2015 flu season.
The influenza vaccine is updated each year to reflect virus strains circulating around the world. Production of the influenza vaccine this year was delayed due to the need for two strain changes in response to the flu strains seen in the northern hemisphere in their flu season.
I've heard there are two types - a trivalent (3 strains) and quadrivalent (4 strains) - what's the difference?
Two types if influenza vaccine are available in Australia this year - Trivalent Influenza Vaccine (TIV) and Quadrivalent Influenza Vaccine (QIV). Trivalent Influenza vaccines include Influvac®, Vaxigrip®, Fluvax®, Fluarix®, Agrippal®. Quadrivalent Influenza vaccines include Fluarix Tetra® and FluQuadri®.
The 2015 TIV contains antigens from 2 Influenza A Strains and one B strain. The QIV contains the same plus and additional B strain. This will only offer an advantage if the additional B strain actually occurs in large numbers (in the US, the additional B strain was seen in less than 2% of cases). There is no clinical evidence yet that the QIV will offer additional benefit in protection from flu in Australia in 2015.
Is there supply of both types of vaccines?
Supply of the Trivalent Influenza Vaccine (TIV) is back to normal levels in community pharmacy and is the vaccine provided as part of the National Immunisation Program. This is the vaccine type we provide to customers in our clinic unless customers request otherwise. Supply of the QIV has been delayed but is expected sometime mid to late May. Due to an increased cost, customers may be asked to pay more if specifically requesting the QIV - speak to your Terry White Chemists pharmacist to find out more.
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
During your appointment, a trained Pharmacist will administer a flu vaccination. No prior prescription will be required and appointments take only minutes. You will be asked to complete a consent form and you may be asked some questions about your existing health and any previous reactions you may have had.
Please arrive 5 minutes prior to your appointment and be aware you will need to remain in store for a further 15 minutes observation period. Some customers may be eligible for the free vaccine from your GP - please speak to your pharmacist or GP to see if you are eligible.
Important: Some people may not be eligible for the flu vaccination. Please call your local TWC to confirm if you are eligible.
